Ginger and Honey
Old rats with hind leg problems, or arthritis may benefit from having access to a water bottle filled with cold, ginger and honey tea.
Ginger - can be used as an anti-inflammatory. Scientific studies on arthritic rats have proven ginger has beneficial properties, reducing swelling in the joints. It has also been shown to inhibit tumour growth.
Honey - also helps alleviate swelling in the tissues. It also promotes healing and soothes aches and pains.
There is also research to suggest that honey helps with the absorption of calcium.
Ginger and Honey Tea
Frozen ginger root is easier to grate than fresh. Grating allows the hot water to better penetrate the harder parts of the root.
•Grate about 1cm of ginger root.
•Add to a cup of cold water then bring to the boil in a pan.
•Add a teaspoonful of honey and stir well.
•Allow to cool before transferring to water bottle (or your bottle will melt!).
